Spire Health Presents Interim Results on Anticipating Patient Hospitalizations using Industry’s Leading Remote Respiration Monitor

SAN FRANCISCO,CA – May 14, 2021 -- Spire Health, the leading provider of respiratory remote patient monitoring (RPM), today announced interim results from a clinical trial demonstrating the predictive capabilities and long-term patient adherence of theSpire RPM system. The results will be presented in two ePosters at the 2021 ATS International Conference, held virtually from May 14-19th.

The non-interventional study asked late-stage COPD patients located across the United States to wear Spire Health’s proprietary garment-adhered sensor, Health Tag, for 9 months in order to retrospectively examine usage and data patterns collected. Spire Health Tags are the only commercial solution for long term, continuous monitoring of respiratory effort. The 100% passive sensor form factor does not require any interaction or engagement from patients.

The first poster, Validation of Pre-Hospitalization Notification Performance Using Novelty Detection of Respiratory Force in COPD (ATS Session: TP037), describing the performance of a machine learning model trained on data from the study, showed that the model was able to reliably detect subtle changes in respiratory patterns on average 7 days before patients were hospitalized due to acute exacerbations of COPD.

“Anticipating severe exacerbations 7 days ahead of time is tremendously exciting for the future of COPD care,” said Neema Moraveji, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer of Spire Health, a co-author and principal investigator of the study. “It demonstrates the potential of pairing RPM with a robust sensor able to collect detailed respiratory data over extended periods of time. This dataset just hasn’t existed before. It’s new territory.”

The second poster, Evaluation of Long-Term Adherence to a Garment-Adhered Cardiorespiratory Monitor in Patients with COPD (ATS Session: TP015), analyzing adherence to the Health Tags during the same study, shows long term daily adherence rates of 80.4%, a significant improvement from traditional wrist-worn and clip-based devices.

The abstracts are currently available to view on the ATS website.
